In this interview, Mr. Giles discusses his personal history and experiences as a sugar beet producer for the Empire State Sugar Company. Topics include: his experiences as a youth; raising his family on a dairy farm; growing seed corn, wheat, oats, and barley for the Grange League Federation (GLF); his observations of the Finger Lakes Sugar Beet Growers Association, including his impression of its president, Frank Turek; obtaining the sugar allotment from the USDA; his use of machinery and migrant labor to grow sugar beets; his impressions of the relationship between growers and the refinery; efforts by Agway employees to encourage farmers to sign beet contracts; and his observations on the formation of Agway (formerly GLF).
